Much Ado About Nothing - A Feminist Perspective of Hero Essay -- Femin

A Feminist Perspective of whizz in practically Ado About Nothing Unlike the cognomen of this piece suggests, Hero did non undergo her transformation in Much Ado About Nothing through magic. Rather, Hero was a dupe of the double standards and illogical fears that the men of Shakespeares plays commonly held. The following paraphrase sums it up quite well In the plays female sexuality is not expressed variously through courtship, pregnancy, childbearing, and remarriage, as it is in the period. Instead it is narrowly defined and contained by the conventions of Petrarchan love and cuckoldry. The first idealizes women as a catalyst to male virtue, insisting on their absolute purity. The second fears and mistrusts them for their (usually fantasized) infidelity, an infidelity that requires their substantial or temporary elimination from the world of men, which then re-forms sic itself around the induction of mens shared victimization (Neely 127). Heros engage in Much Ado About N othing is a completed example of how the skewed male perspective can turn a sweet and innocent girl into a scheming strumpet in no time. The main problem is young Count Claudio. He is immature when it hangs to matters of love, and it shows when he hints of his growing feelings for Hero when he asks Benedick what he thinks of her (I.i.161). Claudio cannot come out and just say that he has feelings for Hero, he has to seek approbation from his male counterparts first. While talking to both Benedick and Don Pedro, Claudio describes his feelings as passion first (I.i.219-220), and then he says, That I love her, I feel (I.i.228), indicating that he knows he feels something for Hero, but he is unsure of but what his feeling... ... Ironically, this has occurred because of the folly of the men, almost making up for the double standards exercised in the beginningBut not quite. Hero should not have had to depend on the men to regain her honor. Works Cited Much Ado About Nothing. o rder by Kenneth Branagh. Samuel Goldwyn Company and Renaissance Films, 1993. Prohibition of Religious Ambiguity Essay -- Philosphical Lawfulness, Ag

William jams ArgumentWilliam crowd together argues that agnosticism is not a valid choice to make. He opens his argument with the conjecture that voluntarily adopted faith abides by philosophical faithfulness (74). He builds from this by defining a hypothesis as anything that whitethorn be proposed to...belief and it may be either live or deceased in quality. A life hypothesis is one that appeals as a real possibility. The quality of being live or defunct is not an intrinsic property. Instead, they atomic number 18 relations to the individual thinker measured by...willingness to act. James defines an option as a closing between two hypotheses which may be 1) living or dead, 2) forced or avoidable, and 3) momentous or trivial (75). An option may be genuine if it is live, forced, and momentous. Jamess next move is to show that scientific questions are trivial options with dead hypotheses and are avoidable, unlike the spiritual question. He shows this by questioning whether or not it matters if we have particular scientific theories or scientific beliefs. He conjectures that it makes no difference in these instances. James summarizesScience says things are ethics says some things are better than other things and pietism says...1) the best things are the more eternal things,...and 2) we are better off even presently if we opine 1 (76).James suggests that the unearthly hypothesis is forced and momentous thitherfore, for those who religion is a live hypothesis, it is a genuine option. Hence, James concludes that he cannot bear the agnostic rules for the trueseeking because any rule of thinking which would absolutely prevent us from acknowledging authorized kinds of truth if those kinds of truth were really there, would be an irrational rule (77). U... ...onal decision --just like deciding yes or no,-- and is attended with the same risk of losing the truth (75). Hence, every individuals hand is forced in making a decision regarding the religious hyp othesis. One must either believe in the eternal or believe in the temporal because there is no in between option. According to James, if and when someone identifies with an agnostic philosophy, he or she is not choosing ambiguity, he or she is ultimately choosing disbelief of the religious hypothesis and will be subject to the same consequences of disbelief if the religious hypothesis is sound. Therefore, according to Jamess argument, agnosticism is not philosophically lawful. Works CitedJames, W. (1896). The Will to Believe. In G. L. Bowie, M. W. Michaels, and R. C. Is Achilles right when, in the Iliad XVIII and subsequently, he Essay

Is Achilles right when, in the Iliad XVIII and subsequently, hebitterly blames himself for the death of Patroklos? The main theme of the poem, which is state at the truly beginning isthe wrath of Achilles. From this we are canvassn on a journey of hu gentlemans gentlemanand predict responses. This central theme empowers a magnificentlyarticulated composition out of con coalescence of battle.1 Events thattake place during this journey allow bulls eye to display and develop, within the complaisant framework of heroic honour, the ideas of conflict, isolation, and reconciliation.Within this essay I will deliver to address unmatchable such consequence, thedeath of Patroklos, and see who, what or wherefore this death occurred. Several factors need to be addressed in doing this, divine and humanintervention and re-evaluations of positions. The question of influence from the divine machinery is a veryinteresting one, it could be argued that they are there to dramatise a collect of the h uman condition in which man is a prey to strangeamoral forces. The will of Zeus was not the catalyst that broughtabout the potfall of Patroklos, the pick up from Achilles came priorto this. The poem from that request unfolds to provide a counterweightd, symmetrical prose, one that provides necessary casualties along theway. It is with certainty though that their influence is entangle andwitnessed passim this journey, one that Albin Lesky raises withmuch success. He suggests that that divine and human causation is felt throughout,a warrior feeling an irresistible courage, this courage is explainedaway with the gods. What Lesky whence goes onto say is that the humanand divine work along side separately other, one strengthens the other andthat the whole world is full of their influence. A great warriorcould attri providede his gift to the gods, and when his greatness escapeshim they are to blame. But this does not clear man of hisresponsibility, what he does with these divine gi fts are solely downto him. This brings me back to the question of who was to blame? Itcould be suggested that Apollo had a hand in this down fall, he isresponsible in setting actions in execution (1.43-52) and then again(24.33-54). But again it can be utter that this too was a reaction toearlier requests. What it does show however is the balance whichHomer provides throughout the poem. Apollos ... ...eresting one, not until booktwenty intravenous feeding does Achilles finally eat and when he does, with Priam itsymbolises his outwardly change, he is urging a mutual activity, atoken of common humanity4The conversation amongst Achilles and Priam is one of understandingand remorse. In Achilles treatment of Priam there is real magnanimity, his impatience cools and he looks beyond it to a serene and steady acknowledgmentthat man can do no more than bear the random fusion of good and bad,and with food, eating means living, and even grief must refund tonecessity. Amid the human hope and in the knowledge of imminent death,Achilles for the first sentence sees life steadily and sees it whole.Together the divine and human influence damp in the poem a linearimpetus that supplement the vestibular sense and the symmetry. The resultis a twofold construction that is together cruel and cordial, but workbeautifully in taking us to a roller-coaster conclusion.---------------------------------------------------------------------1 Lesky, prophesy and Human Causation in Homeric Epic2 Taplin, Homeric Soundings3 Rutherford, Homer (1996)4 Taplin, Homeric Soundings (1992)

Langston Hughes Essay -- essays research papers fc

Langston HughesThroughout many of Langston Hughes poetry, there seems to be a very backbreaking theme of racism. Poems such as Ballad of the Landlord, I, Too, and Dinner customer Me are some good examples of that theme. The Ballad of the Landlord addresses the issue of prejudice in the sense of race as well as class. The lines My roof has sprung a leak. / Dont you member I told you about it/ Way last week? (Hughes 2/4) army the reader that the verbaliser, the tenant, is of a much lower class than his landlord. It also shows that the landlord could finagle less of what condition his building is in as long as the money is still coming in. Well, thats Ten Bucks moren Ill pay you / Till you pin down this house up new. (Hughes 11/12) shows that the speaker may be cleverer than before thought because he is hitting the landlord right where it hurts his wallet. At this point it seems that the speaker may actually win and get his home fixed up, until he threatens the landlord in fifth stanza. Thats when it all turns around. The landlord uses that threat to get the speaker, who we right off find out, is black, thrown in jail.Richard K. Barksdale wrote in 1940, Ballad of the Landlord was a rather barren rendering of an imaginary dialogue between a disgruntled tenant and a tight-fisted landlord. He then goes on to comment about the literary productions having once again pitted the haves against the have-nots. According to him, the landlord / tenant confrontation was still another i...
